Melodic Mondays: Superheroes by The Script

So, if you’ve been in the writing game for any amount of time, you’ve undoubtedly heard us writers talk about hurting our characters. Some authors (like me) in a strange, sadistic, yet masochistic sort of way rather enjoy the process; others (also like me, depending on my mood, character, and story) hate hurting their babies and sob miserably all the way though. Regardless of the author’s heart or lack thereof, the charries often end up hurtwhether physically, emotionally, or both. They’re often forced to labor, struggle, fight for even the smallest good thing to come their way.

But why do we do that? If half of us don’t even enjoy the process, why do almost all of us make our charries’ lives next to impossible?

Well, it’s simple really: so that they can become Superheroes.

This is why authors hurt their characters, why they make their lives impossible and force them to fight for every breath. So we can see our sweet babies turn their pain into power, and watch as our lovely people from the page become vibrant, beautiful, courageous individuals that readers will adore and relate to.

So what’d you think of the song? Hurt any of your babies lately? How’d that go for you, by the way: tons of tears or laughing maniacally the whole way through? Comment me!

  1. *Massive gasp* I freaking love this song!!! It's actually a lot like Mika and Tomas from Two-Faced! It also helped me work something out about their powers. Which was nice. x)
As for hurting my babies, I wrote Mika having her first panic attack the other day. It went well. Lots of quiet internal cackling. Along with some cooing because Daku comforted her and I love his character so much. <3

    1. Hehe, no one's surprised that you cackled while hurting your characters, Rebecca, lol
And cool! It's always awesome when you find the perfect songs for your characters.

  2. I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH. Aaand pretty much the only reason is that there's a totally awesome/sad/HEARTBREAKING fanmade video for Agents of SHIELD to that song. Seriously, it makes me want to cry.

BUT anyway. This song is pretty awesome. I'm not even familiar with the artists or anything, but I love this song. xD

  4. Oh my gosh. 'Have you hurt any babies lately?' LOL! XD

But, ahaha, this song is so good. :') And I have, in fact, hurt one of my little character babies; she's starting a high school and she's super nervous, poor thing. I put her through a lot. XD What about you?

Also, Alexa. Ahehehem. This is off topic, but I was so excited to tell you. akdjflaksjdfla. Are you ready for this? I watched . . . Ahehem. AVENGERS 2. (THE. MAXIMOFF. TWINS. *weeps and weeps and sobs and weeps and sobs*)

    1. Ah, good for you! Turning her into a superhero already, lol
And hahaha *laugh turn to mental sobbing* yeah, I hurt my babies a lot. One's in foster care being bullied like crazy, and his story isn't even the worst of them all... it's kinda bad. But I keep telling myself it'll make them all stronger in the end.

YES YES YES YES I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU. THE MAXIMOFF TWINS ARE THE BEST. I HAVE FINALLY DECIDED THAT THEY ARE MY FAVORITES. *weeps and sobs with you!*

    2. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. YOUR POOR BABIES. But you're right; they will thank you when they see the outcome of their stories. :D <3 Are you concocting to hurt any new babies for NaNoWriMo, or are you going to start a new story with your current babies? XD

DJKLAFJLKADJSL. THEY ARE LIKE. AJKDFLASKFJDAS. OH MY GOSH. I WAS LIKE. LKADJFLKDSJFA. I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT, BUT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN. XD ARGHHHH. I CAN SEE AND UNDERSTAND WHY YOU HAVE BEEN FLAILING ABOUT THEM. :")

    3. I don't know if I'm gonna do NaNo! I would love to, but I don't know if I'll have time. I will hurt some babies and churn out some superheroes if I can though (which sounds kind of bad, but hey, we're writers).

YES. YES. THAT IS A GOOD EXPLANATION FOR THEM. AND HEHEHEHE YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING?

  5. Oooh, I've heard this song before and I totally love it. I'm all for hurting my characters SO MUCH. Like, I usually have to tone myself down a little because my beta readers say things like 80% of your characters died in this book--you can't do that, or, this book made me so depressed I drowned a cat, or something like that. But it's sooooo fun.

    1. Lol, wow you really do turn them into superheroes... the ones that survive that is.
And hehe, well, that kinda feedback lets you know you're doing a lot of it right!

  6. Huh, this is an interesting song, and I like how it relates back to us writers! I am not sure that the song is really my style, but thanks for sharing it! I always like to listen to new things. :)
